Sentencing delay sought in RI Navy kickbacks case (AP)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? Federal prosecutors in Rhode Island want to delay the sentencing of a Georgia man involved in a kickbacks scheme that authorities say cost the U.S. Navy between $7 million and $20 million.

Prosecutors asked on Tuesday to postpone the sentencing of 51-year-old Patrick Barry Nagle for four months. The Marietta, Ga., resident is scheduled to learn his punishment on March 1.

Nagle is cooperating with authorities as part of a plea agreement. Prosecutors say they need his help beyond his sentencing date. Sentencing dates for two other defendants have been delayed until June.

Nagle pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to commit bribery. Prosecutors say he made payments on invoices that were inflated by subcontractors given Navy work by his firm, Advanced Solutions for Tomorrow. The company is now defunct.

A pet dog anc cat (City of Alameda)

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) ? Important decisions pet owners can make on behalf of their animals to ensure a healthy new year for them ? that?s the topic of this Animal Update with Dr. Jack Aldridge of the San Francisco SPCA.

Hard to believe, but it?s 2012 and that means we?re making New Year?s resolutions ? not just for ourselves but for our pets.

?If you haven?t already done so, choose a good veterinarian for your pet,? Aldridge advised. ?One you trust, one who listens and is responsible. And, a yearly wellness checkup for both cats and dogs, which includes a medical and dental examination, is a proactive way to ensure your pet?s health for the new year.?
KCBS? Jeff Bell:

Animal Update: Ensure a Healthy New Year for Your Pets

?It?s important to follow your veterinarian?s guidance about vaccination schedules for rabies as well as other deadly disease,? Aldridge continued. ?And have your dog or cat tested for heartworms and other parasites.?

President Obama signs indefinite detention bill into law

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), signed by President Obama into law Dec. 31, contains a sweeping worldwide indefinite detention provision.

?The statute is particularly dangerous because it has no temporal or geographic limitations, and can be used by this and future presidents to militarily detain people captured far from any battlefield,?? said ACLU executive director Anthony D. Romero.

The ACLU believes that any military detention of American citizens or others within the United States is unconstitutional and illegal, including under the NDAA. In addition, the breadth of the NDAA?s detention authority violates international law because it is not limited to people captured in the context of an actual armed conflict as required by the laws of war, according to the ACLU statement.

Jim Morrison's former home damaged by arson

A Laurel Canyon home once inhabited by Jim Morrison was damaged in one of the 19 overnight arson attacks that plagued Hollywood and West Hollywood early Friday morning, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The fire -- at 8021 Rothdell Trail in Hollywood -- broke out at 1:20 a.m. in a nearby car, then spread to the house.

Morrison lived in the 1922 Hollywood home with his girlfriend Pamela Courson. It's where he wrote the Doors album "Waiting for the Sun" and portions of "The Soft Parade."

The Laurel Canyon street on which it's located also was the inspiration for the Doors song "Love Street," which played during the closing credits of a season two episode of "Entourage."

According to the Times, 56 firefighters responded to the blaze, which took 35 minutes to contain. One of the firefighters was injured in a fall from a ladder on the ground. He is in stable condition at a local hospital.

Hollywood fires continue on New Year's Eve

Most of the 19 fires were apparently started in cars or carports. Earlier this week, police arrested two individuals in connection with three other arson incidents Thursday morning on Sunset Boulevard. Police and fire officials have not released a suspect description pertaining to the fires that happened overnight.

A city of Los Angeles Fire Department official did not respond to TheWrap's request for comment.

MCN Staff ? Multichannel News, 12/29/2011 5:03:52 PM

Charter Communications completed a $927 million debt tender, while it also acquired $200 million worth of stock and agreed to purchase an additional $321 million of shares in private transactions, the company announced Thursday.

The MSO?s previously announced cash tender offers for notes due 2012, 2014 and 2016 for debt securities up to $1 billion expired Dec. 28. Charter paid $407 million for the 2012 notes and $234 million for the 2014 notes, the company said. Investors offered $669.4 million in 2016 notes of which Charter accepted $286 million.

Under the share repurchase program, announced Aug. 9, 2011, Charter acquired approximately 4.125 million shares of Class A common stock for a total of $200 million, or an average of $48.48 per share.

In addition, Charter agreed to purchase an additional 5.891 million shares in privately negotiated transactions for an average of $54.46 per share. The company entered into a stock repurchase agreement with an unidentified shareholder to purchase 750,000 shares at $55.18, and subsequently agreed to acquire an aggregate of 5.141 million shares from certain funds affiliated with Oaktree Capital Management and Apollo Management Holdings at the price of $54.35 per share.

In total, in 2011 Charter will have repurchased a total of 14.5 million shares, or 12.7% of its outstanding shares at the beginning of the year. According to the company, its leverage ratio would have been 4.8 times net debt to the last 12 months of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) on a pro-forma basis as of Sept. 30, 2011.

?The repurchases demonstrate Charter?s and the board?s confidence about the company?s future,? outgoing Charter president and CEO Mike Lovett said in a statement. ?In 2011 we have repurchased 12.7% of the Company?s outstanding shares at an average price of $50.17, which reflects a series of strategic opportunities to deliver value to our shareholders.?

Charter last week named Tom Rutledge, formerly chief operating officer of Cablevision Systems, to be president and CEO effective Feb. 13, 2012.

Following the stock repurchases, according to Charter, Apollo will continue to own 33.541 million shares of Class A common stock representing 33.26% of outstanding shares and Oaktree will hold 16.615 million shares, or 16.56% of outstanding shares. The company expects to close the privately negotiated transactions by Friday (Dec. 30).
