Jon Stewart: GOP talks about amnesty like it?s a deviant sexual practice

By Eric W. Dolan
Thursday, January 31, 2013 0:18 EST

?

On his show Wednesday night, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart ripped into Republicans for changing their stance on immigration based purely on a cynical political calculation.

Stewart observed that Republicans had fought over who had the most hardline policy on immigration before the 2012 election. During the presidential primary race, the GOP candidates accused each other of being too accepting of ?amnesty? for undocumented immigrations.

?They talk about amnesty like its some deviant sexual practice,? Stewart remarked, before playing a clip of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer talking about ?backdoor amnesty.?

But many Republicans recently softened their stance on immigration. As Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) explained, ?look at the last election.?

?Not sure that?s the reason you are supposed to say out loud,? Stewart joked.

CNN Changes: James Carville, Mary Matalin Out - Business Insider

CNN

CNN is losing managing editor Mark Whitaker and five significant political contributors to the network, FishbowlDC's Betsy Rothstein reports.

Whitaker is resigning from the network, according to a report from Alex Weprin at MediaBistro. In his outgoing memo to staff, Whitaker said he would depart because he believes incoming president Jeff Zucker "deserves his own team and management structure and the freedom to communicate one clear vision to the staff."

Meanwhile, political pundit couple James Carville and Mary Matalin will not have their contracts continued, according to Rothstein's report. And conservative contributor Erick Erickson will also leave the network for Fox News. Finally, the former Republican Secretary of Education Bill Bennett and Democratic strategist Maria Cardona are also not coming back. Cardona will remain a contributor with CNN Espanol.

The network has undergone a flurry of changes in the past month-plus. On Tuesday, the network also announced it was adding former ABC reporter and?20/20 co-anchor Chris Cuomo. In December, former ABC reporter and White House correspondent Jake Tapper joined the network.?

In November, CNN announced that Zucker would replace?Jim Walton as the network's president.

UPDATE:?CNN's Erick Erickson confirmed he was leaving CNN in a post on RedState.com, for which he is managing editor.

"Yes, I can confirm I am leaving CNN. It was a very, very difficult decision," Erickson wrote.

Biology's ?Original Sin? | Yale Press Log

In the epigram to Christian de Duve?s Genetics of Original Sin: The Impact of Natural Selection on the Future of Humanity?we find a verse from the book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible where ?the woman? eats the forbidden fruit of the tree, then gives it to the man. This act, said to represent the original sin, will be the leading symbol in de Duve?s account of humanity?s biological course. This is a thoroughly scientific account which employs biblical metaphors to put the story of humanity and biology in a philosophical context.

Genetics of Original Sin: The Impact of Natural Selection on the Future of HumanityFor de Duve, natural selection?s drive for competition and survival is the original sin, yet it may prove to be our species? redemption. (The theological metaphors he uses accord with the high stakes of his claims about the trajectory and future of humanity.) Our original sin is natural selection?s biological initiative that emphasizes gains for survival and flourishing in the short term. As a species we have developed biologically, cognitively, and culturally at lightning speed, acquiring and exploiting resources as hastily as our constraints would allow. As de Duve explains, the world?s resources can no longer support this, and we must use our other advantages as humans to solve the problem. Our primary advantage is the intelligence we developed.

This intelligence allowed humans to create culture which de Duve explains to us through the biological account. ?Between plucking termites with a denuded branch and splitting the atom,? he writes, ?between calling the group together under a tree with a howl and singing Saint Matthew?s Passion in the Sistine Chapel, the difference is one of brain size?? The author?s flair for such poetic details puts a spotlight on the subtle dynamic and creative processes of our biological history. It shows us both the mystery and logic of the scientific story. In a sense this account shows that humans are both special and not special as creatures in what we share and do not share with our animal cohorts. ?Unlike other living species,? explains de Duve, ?they [humans] have not achieved their successes by developing appropriate physical adaptations; they have done it with their intelligence.? Our particular intelligence has set us apart, and de Duve hopes it can help us figure out how to better manage our place on the planet.

De Duve reads this human propensity for competition as a central theme that reoccurs in all expressions of human civilization, showing us how it is born from our genes. In the achievements of human culture, the remarkable advancements, mastery and inventions we have made, even in leisure we may find this impulse of competition for survival. ?Even in peace,? writes de Duve, ?competition has remained, directly or by proxy, the widely, passionately, and, sometimes, violently practiced form of entertainment? The warring instinct is embedded in human nature.? The author cites war memorials and the wealth of artistic tributes to victory in public monuments scattered through the world.

Our human genetics have gotten us here, and they may get us out. Through the lens of biology, De Duve gives us a sweeping narrative of the rise and potential decline of the human species. While de Duve begins with a reference to the biblical account of original sin, yet another passage from Genesis comes to mind to describe the author?s story: ?And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.? Humanity, to the extent that we have subdued the natural world, is a ?successful? sort of species. This success is the source of tension and our potential capacity to solve the problem. Appealing to our intelligence as a species, de Duve suggests through this capacity we may be able to overcome our short-sightedness to make the difficult decisions that will allow for a viable future on this planet for those that come after us.

Amazon adds Windows Phone 8 support to Kindle app, keeps the Live Tiles going

Amazon's been doing a pretty decent job at blanketing those Android and iOS Kindle applications with the latest and greatest, but the same couldn't exactly be said about its Windows Phone counterpart. Today there's great news for users of Redmond's mobile OS, however, as the Fire maker has announced an update that brings some much-needed support for Windows Phone 8 to the app, which should pair well with the company's Whispersync tech and the extensive e-book repertoire it has to offer. There might be one caveat, though: early adopters of the refreshed Kindle app have said it's facing some crashing issues and, in some cases, even having trouble launching -- a few folks, meanwhile, have mentioned that it's best to do a clean install rather than update the previous version in order to avoid any woes. The link to grab the application is down below, and do use the comments section to let us know how the process turned out for you.

Professional training 'in the wild' overrides laboratory decision preferences

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Many simulation-based studies have been conducted, and theories developed, about the behaviors of financial market traders. New work by human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) researchers suggests that decision-making research on the behavior of traders conducted "in the wild" (i.e., real-world situations) can offer an alternative lens that extends laboratory insights and provokes new questions.

In their article in the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making, "Understanding Preferences in Experience-Based Choice," authors Claire McAndrew (University College London) and Julie Gore (University of Surrey) examined the gap between the decision-making preferences of financial traders "in the wild" compared to laboratory experimentation where the probabilities of outcomes are known (prospect theory).

The authors conducted in-depth interviews about past financial trading decisions with eight traders to understand how decisions were made. All participants were employed by firms authorized and regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority and had, on average, 10.9 years of experience. The traders' decision-making processes were tracked step by step, focusing on their risk-seeking or risk-adverse behavior with respect to the probability of gains and losses.

"What we found is that professional training provides distinct objectives and goals that override preferences generated in the laboratory," said McAndrew. The study found that traders were risk adverse to three of the four scenarios compared with only two of four in the same scenarios suggested by prospect theory.

"Recognition of the interplay of the professional, task, and environment are clearly documented, which is often simply not possible in laboratory settings," said McAndrew. Whereas laboratory studies can be designed to emulate real-world conditions, trading markets are complicated and dynamic systems. The shifting, ill-defined, or competing issues that characterize trader environments are difficult to reproduce in laboratory studies. Many previous lab-based studies on financial traders could be augmented by "in the wild" examination.

This insight into real-world decision-making behavior has consequences for the design of instructional training for novices and has the potential to minimize costly mistakes. Changes in professional training might extend to other complex sociotechnical systems, such as aviation, the military, and nursing -- domains where experts, like stock traders, are similarly risk averse except when faced with large-probability gains.

Kurdish militants set to halt Turkey hostilities in February: paper

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Kurdish militants will announce a halt to hostilities with the Turkish state in February according to the timetable of a fledgling peace process aimed at ending a 28-year-old insurgency, a newspaper report said on Tuesday.

As an initial confidence-building step, around 100 fighters from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrilla group will disarm and withdraw from Turkish soil, the Hurriyet daily said.

Turkish intelligence officials began talks with jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan in late 2012 and Hurriyet said talks had also been held with the PKK in northern Iraq, where most of the group's militants are based.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in fighting since the rebels took up arms in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey. The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Ankara, the United States and the European Union.

The conflict is the chief domestic problem facing Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan after 10 years in power.

"According to the timetable on the table, the PKK will announce its decision to halt hostilities in February right after an official call by Abdullah Ocalan," the paper said.

Under a framework for peace discussed with Ocalan, the PKK fighters will ultimately disarm after withdrawing from Turkey and the government will in return boost Kurdish minority rights.

The paper did not identify its sources and officials were not immediately available to comment.

iOS Drafts, Tight Wallets, and Day Calendars

iOS Drafts, Tight Wallets, and Day CalendarsReaders offer their best tips for quickly accessing your iOS drafts, making the best of a tight wallet, and repurposing unwanted day calendars.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

iOS Drafts, Tight Wallets, and Day Calendars

Quickly Access Drafts in iOS Mail

Matt discovers a handy shortcut in iOS 6:

I use Gmail's drafts feature a lot, but drafts aren't easy to access on the iPhone?you have to go all the way back to the Accounts menu and then go to drafts. Well, I found that you can access drafts in iOS 6 instantly just by long-pressing the Compose button from any window! That'll show you your drafts for any account. Handy if you use them a lot, like me.

iOS Drafts, Tight Wallets, and Day Calendars

Access Your Credit Cards More Easily with a Simple Notch

Kith makes up for the tightness of his new wallet:

I recently bought a new wallet. The card pockets, being so new, are naturally very tight and I was having trouble getting my frequently used cards out. The solution: I took a pair of nail clippers and cut a tiny notch on the sides of each card near the top edge. Now, instead of trying to get a grip on the surface of a card, I can slide a fingernail into the notch on each side and pull the cards out quickly and easily.

iOS Drafts, Tight Wallets, and Day Calendars

Repurpose Day Calendars as Scratch Pads

CSGeek finds a new use for annoying calendars:

Want to repurpose the page-a-day calendar that you got for Christmas and hate? Pull the paper off the plastic backing and flip it over. Instant scratch pad!

iOS Drafts, Tight Wallets, and Day Calendars

Save Time By Cutting Files Instead of Copying

MsCassLopez saves some time moving files:

If you're copying lots of large files, for example media files from one folder to another on the same disk you can speed up the process by selecting "Cut" from the menu instead of "Copy." Windows doesn't physically move the files in a cut operation, it just updates internal pointers. In a copy operation by definition it creates new copies, a time consuming process. Windows 7 and up doesn't have the annoying feature of XP and earlier where if you performed a cut operation and did something else before pasting then you lost your stuff into the Twilight Zone.

Most of you probably know this, but if your instinct is to copy and then delete, this will save you more than just the few seconds you think it will, since copying files takes much, much longer than just moving them. This works on OS X and Linux too. Unfortunately, if you're moving files between drives, you have to copy?you can't cut and paste.

Police: Brazil nightclub fire kills at least 180

Agencia RBS via AP

People help a man injured in a nightclub fire in Santa Maria city, Brazil, on Sunday.

By NBC News and wire reports

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil - Local police told NBC News that at least 245 people were killed in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show set the establishment ablaze, and fleeing patrons were unable to find the emergency exits.

The toll was expected to rise, police said.

Bodies were still being removed from the Kiss nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria, Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, who was leading rescue efforts at the scene for the military police, told Reuters.?

Ferreira told Reuters that the victims died of asphyxiation or from being trampled, and that there were possibly as many as 500 people inside the club when the fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m.?

Television footage showed people sobbing outside the club, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.?

"It was really fast. There was a lot of smoke, really dark smoke," survivor Aline Santos Silva, 29, told Globonews TV. "We were only able to get out quickly because we were in a VIP area close to the door."?

President Dilma Rousseff cut short a visit to Chile and was returning to Brazil following the blaze, her spokesperson said.?

Luiza Sousa, a civil police official in Santa Maria, told Reuters the blaze started when a member of the band or its production team ignited a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling. The fire spread "in seconds," Sousa said.?

Ronald Mendes / EPA

Relatives of those trapped in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil mourn on Sunday.

The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment ablaze.?

Brazil's safety standards and emergency response capabilities are under particular scrutiny as the country prepares to host the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics.?

Rio Grande do Sul state Health Secretary Ciro Simoni said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene.?

Santa Maria is some 186 miles west of the state capital of Porto Alegre. "A sad Sunday!" tweeted Rio Grande do Sul Governor Tarso Genro. He said "all possible measures" were being taken in response and that he was on his way to the scene.?

Reuters and NBC News contributed to this report.?

Egypt's leader imposes state of emergency in 3 cities

"Down, down Morsi, down down the regime that killed and tortured us!" people in Port Said chanted as the coffins of those killed on Saturday were carried through the streets.

In a televised address, Morsi said a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, starting Monday evening. He also called for dialogue with top politicians. About 200 people protested in Ismailia after the announcement.

"The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," the president said, adding that he offered condolences to families of the victims of those who died in the cities.

In Cairo the newly appointed interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim was ejected from the funeral of one of the police officers who died during Saturday's clashes in Port Said, according to witnesses and police sources.

A police officer at the funeral said many of his colleagues blame the interior minister on the deaths of at least two policemen during Saturday's clashes as he did not allow the police there to carry weapons and were only given teargas bombs.

State television said seven people died from gunshot wounds on Sunday. Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters more than 400 people had suffered from teargas inhalation, while 38 were wounded by gunshots.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents went on the rampage after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns because they do not trust the authorities to protect them. However it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

In Ismaila city, which lies on the Suez Canal between the cities of Suez and Port Said, police also fired teargas at protesters attacking a police station with petrol bombs and stones, according to witnesses and a security source there.

The protesters accuse Morsi, elected in June with the support of his Muslim Brotherhood group, of betraying the democratic goals of the revolution. Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

The violence adds to the daunting task facing Morsi as he tries to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary election expected in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy.

Deep rift
It has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Morsi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader by undemocratic means.

Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said a state of emergency reintroduced laws that gave police sweeping powers of arrest "purely because (people) look suspicious".

"It is a classic knee jerk reaction to think the emergency law will help bring security," she said. "It gives so much discretion to the Ministry of Interior that it ends up causing more abuse which in turn causes more anger."

The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

On a bridge close to Tahrir Square, youths hurled stones at police in riot gear who fired teargas to push them back towards the square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.?

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Morsi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the violence that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

Call for dialogue
The National Defence Council, headed by Morsi, called on Saturday for national dialogue to discuss political differences.

That offer has been cautiously welcomed by the opposition National Salvation Front. But the coalition has demanded a clear agenda and guarantees that any agreements will be implemented.

The Front, formed late last year when Morsi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

Egypt's transition has been blighted from the outset by political rows and turbulence on the streets that have driven investors out and kept many tourists away. Its currency, the pound, has steadily weakened against the dollar.

The Reluctant Rancher (Billionaire Rancher) (BBW)The Reluctant Rancher (Billionaire Rancher) (BBW)"Luke Tanner and women didn't mix, plain and simple."

Luke Tanner learned early on that no one cared enough to look past his roughhewned appearance and sour attitude to discover what lay beneath the surface - other than his wallet. When Mary Carter hits him up for a loan, he makes her a proposition she can't refuse.

Mary fantasized about Luke Tanner since her first glimpse of the veritable mountain of a man. She knows there's more to Luke than his bank account. Though she tries to hide her feelings, a fire burns between them. Will it end in ashes - or forge a love that would last a lifetime.

EXCERPT:

?Who the hell are you and what are you doing on my land??

The shock of the deep male voice held Mary immobile for several seconds.

She turned slowly, facing the man she had come to see. But if the sound of his voice had shocked her, the sight of the man stunned her. Mary had seen Luke Tanner on several occasions but she had never been this up close and personal. A mountain of a man, she had to look up to see his face. A long way up. With genuine feminine appreciation she realized that Luke Tanner would stand at least six-foot-four in his stocking feet. His shoulders were broad and sturdy, their huge mass emphasized by the flannel-lined denim work jacket he wore. His large size made her, Mary Carter, feel small and dainty.

A patch of dark, curling hair peeked out from the neckline of his blue plaid western shirt and her stomach quivered at the tantalizing glimpse of his permanently sun-darkened chest. Her gaze fell, drinking in the sight of his strong, muscular legs. Whitewashed jeans clung lovingly to every male sinew. Even though his waist could never be called slim, it was in perfect proportion to his size. To Mary, he was a fine looking man.

With great reluctance, she tore her gaze away, taking in the rest of his sun-bronzed features ? his frowning forehead, his beard-roughened jaw, and his crooked nose. Immediately his eyes captured her attention. My goodness, she had never seen such incredible eyes. Green as the mountain grass after the first spring rain and surrounded by lashes a woman would die for.

Mary shivered, more in reaction to this potently virile male than from the cold seeping beneath her coat.

Video: Women in a combat role divides many

>>> welcome back. time now for the news nation gut check. following breaking news this hour. history, in fact. the pentagon is lifting the ban on women serving in combat. joining me now, congresswoman and veteran, tammy duckworth of illinois, one of the first female combat vets elected to congress. thank you for your time and your service. you're all smiles so you're quite pleased with the announcement today.

>> i am very pleased. women have been serving in combat, especially in iraq and afghanistan for the last ten years. so i see this as just a formality in lifting the restrictions so women finally serve on equal footing. they have been doing the job. they haven't been getting credit for it so it's about time.

>> it is interesting. i saw you featured in the "nightly news" piece last night and you said you didn't get the injuries in a bar fight as you explained it when asked about women in combat .

>> right. i actually, you know, would have people come up to me and say, do you think women should serve in combat? i wear a combat action badge on my uniform. that's given only for combat action. and i just, you know, i usually joke and say, i got it in a bar fight . you should see the other chick. but, you know -- but the reality is women are serving, dying, being wounded in combat and this -- lifting this restriction will allow them to do this formally and rise through the ranks. we don't have very female generals and it's because of the restriction so this is a great day for our military women .

>> congresswoman, thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate your candor and the humor. the line of the day. you should see the other chick. thank you so much for your time. great pleasure. so what does your gut tell you? you heard from congresswoman duckworth. do you agree with the decision to allow women to fight in combat roles? cast that big vote.

The FSBO Conundrum: Five Things to Consider if You Want to Sell ...

I found this cute house over off Inwood and Lovers, on a little street called (7203) Morton.

Sorry, no links: it?s a for sale by owner. On the plus side, there was a flyer in the flyer box, which is rare. According to the flyer, the home is 1,579 square feet, updated with new roof, new hardwoods, carpet, and a step-down third bedroom with travertine. Totally new kitchen and updated baths, separate utility room. New sprinkler system, new fence, new private gate, new deck, flagstone patio and outdoor accent lighting. They are also offering a home warranty from American Home Shield, but I wonder why with all that new stuff? So here?s the $269,000 question: where is the website? You have to call about this house, and when I did, I left a message that was not returned.

How can this seller sell this house?

I get it: some people think they can sell their home themselves, and some can. I did it once, actually. A few years ago, 80% of all FSBO (for sale by owner) buyers surveyed by the National Association of Realtors said they would not go FSBO alone the second time around ? they?d hire a real estate agent. Still, the number of FSBO sellers willing to represent themselves seems to have grown in recent years. Now only 50% of FSBO buyers say they?d let an agent do the work. Which is weird, because the market has less inventory and way more hip pockets. If anything, I think Realtors are becoming MORE necessary.

Often, homeowners undergoing a financial hardship think they can sell their home themselves to save money. Unfortunately, it doesn?t work out that way and the house remains on the market longer, selling for less or short selling. The agent can also save you enormous amounts of time. Here are five things to consider if you think you might want to ?Play Realtor.?

1. What Is Your Home Really Worth?
The biggest shocker for most sellers is the true value of their homes, determined by a comparative market analysis (CMA), an appraiser, or actual offers from buyers. The reality is that markets change, and home values rise and fall. Many factors affect home values, and most of them are subjective and difficult to measure. Home values on the same street can be vastly different. And a market can change in a matter of weeks. I know a seller who is selling his home based on what he wants to net ? the home has been on the market for over a year, and he has refused one offer that was in the ballpark of the home?s true value. He?s still a homeowner.

2. Shocker: Not Everyone is Going to Adore Your Home
Yeah, it?s your castle, but buyers have their own ideas and lifestyles, preferences, tastes and attitudes. It is highly unlikely a buyer will ever take your home as it is and not change one doorpull. Most buyers will look at your home with an eye as to how they can make it their own. That?s why a Realtor?s advice can help you spend money wisely on the house prep: should you spend thousands on gardening? Paint everything beige? Change the upstairs carpet or offer an allowance?

3. Buyers Will Insult You
Get ready to get insulted. Most buyers try to pick your home apart to improve bargaining leverage. You will likely feel like telling them to take a hike, and go find someone else to torture. Many of their buyer?s complaints and requests for repairs can be legitimate, especially if an inspection turns up repairs and deferred maintenance. Most agents will suggest you get an inspection before you market a home. Still, some requests can be outrageous and you may lose potential buyers. Try not to punch anyone!

4. Buyers Will Want to Come First Thing In The Morning, or At A Moment?s Notice
You cannot control the buyer?s schedule. When your home is on the market, it?s not just your Realtor (or you) but dozens of Realtors and their clients wanting to see the home 24/7. If you sell your home yourself, be prepared to handle this graciously. Security is a huge issue, and one reason why I would never FSBO these days. I?d insist on security at all open houses, for you and your home.

5. Buyers Can Be Rude

My son was telling me about an open house in California where the market is a bit frenzied, he said fist fights almost broke out. Buyers can be obnoxious ? track mud on your clean floors (makes my blood boil), spill coffee from their Starbucks cups, plop down in your best antique chair or the worst: bring along a bunch of unruly kids who get fingerprints on everything. Be ready to wonder if some buyers are aliens. Agents can shuttle the monsters to their offices.

Of course, the most important thing is marketing your home with great photos and getting it internet exposure now that 99% of all real estate transactions start on the internet. If your home is not in MLS, and circulating in at least 10 places on the internet, it is getting zero exposure.

No one is buying homes off paper anymore, be it newspapers or flyers in the rain-soaked flyer box.

Global stocks edge higher, data offsets Apple's plunge

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World equity and commodity markets rose on Thursday on encouraging economic data, but a steep sell-off in Apple shares that wiped out about $50 billion (31 billion pounds) of its market value threatened to snuff a six-day streak of gains in U.S. stocks.

Apple Inc dropped 12 percent to $452.26 after the technology icon missed Wall Street's revenue forecast for a third straight quarter and threatened to topple it from its ranking as the most valuable U.S. company.

The strong downward push from Apple was partially offset by surprisingly strong economic signals. U.S. factory activity grew the most in nearly two years in January and the number of new claims for jobless benefits dropped to a five-year low last week.

A third report showed the Conference Board's Leading Economic Index rose last month, pointing to improved U.S. growth ahead.

"You have Apple and technology on the one side and the rest of the market on the other side," said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors LLC in Albany, New York.

Initial U.S. stock gains pushed the S&P 500 to rise above the 1,500 mark for the first time since December 12, 2007 and put the benchmark index on pace for its seventh straight advance, its longest streak since October 2006.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 48.85 points, or 0.35 percent, at 13,828.18. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 0.18 points, or 0.01 percent, at 1,494.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 22.44 points, or 0.71 percent, at 3,131.23.

MSCI's world equity index rose 0.15 percent to 353.20, lifted by business surveys showing growth in Chinese manufacturing accelerated to a two-year high in January.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 index of top European shares closed up 0.29 percent at 1,171.06 on signs of growth in Germany, which bolstered expectations that the region's sovereign debt crisis may be easing.

"Leading economic indicators rose, new jobless claims are at the lowest level in many years, and Chinese manufacturing data moved to a positive trajectory," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey, with more than $1 trillion in assets under management. "The Chinese data bodes well for demand which translates into top line revenue growth. If global demand goes up, it's good for U.S. equities."

The benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell 5/32 in price to yield 1.8436 percent, as investors moved funds into stocks.

"It's a reach for return in the equities market," said Todd Colvin, senior vice president of global institutional sales with R.J. O'Brien & Associates in Chicago. "Risk takers are being rewarded so far this year."

January's flash euro zone purchasing managers index pointed to more weakness ahead for a region already mired in recession. But it also hinted at improvement later in the year.

"The pace of recession is clearly easing," said Marco Valli, chief euro zone economist at UniCredit.

The data showed the contrasting fortunes of Germany and France, with German activity at its strongest levels in a year and the French PMI at its lowest level since March 2009.

The growing confidence in the pace of China's economic recovery helped keep Brent crude oil above $113 a barrel. Gold fell $16.44 to $1,668.70 an ounce.

U.S. crude futures rose 72 cents to settle $95.95 a barrel.

The yen tumbled against the dollar, snapping a three-day advance, after a Japanese economic official said the government has no problem with the dollar hitting 100 yen.

The Japanese currency has weakened to about 90 per dollar from 80 since November on expectations Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will force the central bank to ease monetary policy to combat deflation.

The dollar was up 1.57 percent at 89.98 against the yen, while the euro rose 0.41 percent at $1.3371.

The Benghazi Show

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Jan. 23, 2013, about the security failures at the consulate in Benghazi, Libya

Republicans wanted answers about Benghazi. They wanted them yesterday. They wanted them now. ?Why was security at the consulate so inadequate?? asked four Republican senators in an October op-ed. ?Did anyone order U.S. military and intelligence personnel in Benghazi or nearby in the region who offered help to stand down?? One week ago, three of those senators published 14 more questions about the Sept. 11, 2012, attack that killed four Americans. Why was the FBI investigating an ?act of terrorism?? Why wasn?t a military response ready in a hurry, when the consulate came under attack? And ?what were the secretary of State's activities during this time??

They were supposed to find out today. Hillary Clinton, who?s leaving the State Department as soon as she can toss the baton to Sen. John Kerry, spent the morning with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the afternoon with the House. She would have come in December, but events got away from her: an unexplained illness, a pack of Republicans speculating that she had ?Benghazi flu,? the revelation that she?d had a blood clot, followed by some furtive Republican apologies.

Still, Republicans would get their hearing. It wasn?t the Joint Committee on Benghazi that Sen. John McCain wanted, but it would be a chance to break into cable programming, all day, and to put the magnifying glass on Barack Obama?s foreign policy until it caught fire. And they?d have an extra month to come up with questions!

They blew it. All congressional hearings are invitations for preening, showboating, and not-a-question-but-a-comment speeches. The grilling of Hillary Clinton was worse: a repetitive series of losing rematches, of Republicans asking questions that had been asked and answered and asked and answered. They coaxed one new piece of information from her, but they didn?t seem to notice, as their press offices once again tried to shame her for ever suggesting that the Benghazi attack grew out of protests against an anti-Islam video.

What was the one good question? Rep. Tom Cotton, one of the most-hyped members of the GOP?s freshman class, reminded Clinton that a Benghazi suspect had been let go by Tunisia. The United States provided intelligence that helped lead to Ali Harzi; the new regime in Tunisia let him go. Cotton asked Clinton whether that concerned her; she said it didn?t. He?d touched on something primal about the Obama administration?s approach to foreign policy in the post-Arab Spring Middle East.

Vanishingly few Republicans decided to pick up that thread. In the Senate and the House, most Republicans asked Clinton to explain?one more time, please?why the administration didn?t respond quickly to the attacks, why it hadn?t fired the State officials who screwed up, and why Susan Rice had gone on five Sunday shows and ?blamed a video? for the attacks.

If you were a cynic, you wondered whether the inquisitors were basing this on the internal investigation or on the juiciest media reports from last year. Rice ?went on TV talking about a demonstration that never happened,? according to Texas Rep. Michael McCaul. ?Susan Rice said,? according to Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, ?and I quote, ?What happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, which were prompted, of course, by the video.? ? But that wasn?t the full quote. Brooks excised Rice?s caveat that this was the ?best information that we have available to us today,? and her conclusion that ?what we think then transpired in Benghazi is that opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding.?
