Video Conferencing ? A Tech Gift To Global Businesses - Genecast ...

Business leaders are often under intense pressure to be in several places at the same time. They rely on advanced communications technology to maintain contact and control across their organization as they travel. While smart phones and tablets have enhanced the mobile workspace, it is video conferencing that will provide the biggest leap in productivity and biggest reduction in travel. Video can dramatically improve communications accuracy and understanding, and therefore decrease the need to be there in person.

?

Business-grade video conferencing has made meaningful, face-to-face conversation over vast distances a simple communications transaction, like dialing an internal extension. With high quality audio and HD video every comment, every facial expression is captured to deliver more accurate communication. Importantly, modern video endpoints are easy to use, and with striking design they sit well in the office.? ?

?

Whereas video was once the preserve of large corporations, today any business can afford to deploy video throughout all levels of the organization. Video endpoints range from mobile to desktop to office and boardroom units. Video enabled IP phones can be provided to employees at the same cost as a regular phone. Higher level units with large screens and touch-control pads sit easily on manager?s desks, and premium units with multiple screens are located in high-end collaboration rooms. Pervasive video throughout an organization will improve teamwork, collaboration and accelerate decision-making.

?

Core video infrastructure can be based on an organization?s own premises, or it be hosted in the cloud and video provided as a subscription based service. There are advantages to both approaches, it all depends on what is right for your organization.

?

Today video conferencing is about easy to use endpoints that are seamlessly part of an employee?s workspace. They are easy to use, integrated with the unified communications network, and deliver a high quality video experience every time. It means you can be in a virtual meeting in Sydney, then San Francisco, all while you?re sitting in your office in Melbourne. ?

Dr. Jha was honored for services to global health and epidemiology

TORONTO, June 29, 2012---Dr. Prabhat Jha, head of the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael's Hospital, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours.

Dr. Jha, who is also a professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, was honoured for services to global health and epidemiology.

"I'm especially proud to receive this award because it recognizes the transformative power of epidemiological research to reduce premature deaths worldwide," he said.

"Death rates in Canada and other developing counties have dropped because research has identified risk factors such as smoking and widely useful interventions such as treatment of heart attacks. Exporting this knowledge and research is the single biggest thing we can to do improve global health."

Dr. Jha advises various governments around the world on disease control strategies. He is the principal investigator of the Million Death Study, one of the largest studies of premature deaths in the world. In India, where the study is based, most people die at home, especially in rural areas, and without medical attention. As a result, their deaths, like most in the developing world, have no certifiable cause and are invisible to the public health system and society at large. "When you count the dead, the dead count," Dr. Jha says.

An officer is the second of three levels of membership in the Order, which was created in 1967, Canada's centennial year. A maximum of 64 people are appointed to this category each year. The Officer of the Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of achievement and merit of a high degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large. It is equivalent to the government of India's "Padma Bushan" award.

"Prabhat's appointment to the Order of Canada underscores St. Michael's commitment to world-leading research that advances health for all, especially the poorest populations, both here in Toronto and around the world," said Dr. Robert Howard, president and CEO of St. Michael's Hospital.

Dr. Jha will be invested into the Order by Gov. Gen. David Johnston at a ceremony to be held at a later date at Rideau Hall.

Pest Control Canberra More Details about Pest Control Canberra here.

Pest treatment should not be considered as an optional home improvement service; rather it should be taken as a serious compulsory work. If you are located at Canberra, getting the help of the Pest Control Canberra service provider regularly at least once in two months can ensure maximum protection to your home against any form of bugs. With regular activities, you will not only prevent dreaded pest creeping around your home, but will also ensure a health and clean home.

When a professional service provider is invited regularly, he can clearly identify the structural damage that can be caused by the pests well in advance in such a way that your building can be protected. Even though, most of the pests do not cause structural damage to the building, some of them can create problems in the electrical wiring of the home and some might cause some diseases to the incumbents of your home. Here are the reasons for considering the help of a pest control service provider regularly:

Early detection of problems created by pests: Most of the rodents and bugs reproduce rapidly once they have found a suitable place in your home thereby causing a snowball effect in the home. When seeking the help of a professional pest control firm, the firm will be sending a professional who can stop the pest infestations from growing and in addition to solving the existing pest problem; they can also identify the potential pest problems and can wade off the pests even before they enter into your home.

Prevention of fire accidents: Some of the gnawing mammals like hamsters, squirrels and rats, otherwise called as Rodents chew items for preventing their teeth from growing. If these rodents do not chew something, their teeth will grow to a length that would prevent them from eating. Therefore, these living organisms always look for some materials to chew and so there are chances that they damage the electrical settings in the home thereby exposing the home to electrical shocks resulting in fire accidents. Only a professional Pest Control Canberra service provider can protect your home and other property from rodents with the help of some techniques and they can also prevent the entry of rodents by using some equipment like door closes, steel wool, aluminum sheeting, bird wire, etc...

These professional firms can also offer other services like prevention of diseases and they can eliminate the risk of structural damage to the home caused by some types of pests.

Effective pest control services are available in the market that not only control the growth of pests but also eliminates their infestation to the core. Find the best Pest Control Service Providers, Termite control Canberra Experts, Rodent Pest Control service providers in and around Canberra at A1 Pest Control Canberra.

New lithium ion battery strategy offers more energy, longer life cycle
(Nanowerk News) Lithium ion batteries drive devices from electric cars to smartphones. And society is demanding more batteries with more capacity from each battery.
To help meet this demand, Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory users and researchers put their energy behind a clever new idea that, literally, gives batteries a bit of room to grow (see paper in Nano Letters: "A Yolk-Shell Design for Stabilized and Scalable Li-Ion Battery Alloy Anodes").
Lithium ion batteries generate electricity by shuttling lithium ions through an electrolyte. In a fully charged battery, lithium ions are stored in a cathode, such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2). When in use, lithium ions flow from the cathode through an electrolyte into the anode, most commonly made of carbon. During recharging, the ions are pushed back to the cathode where they started.
silicon nanoparticles inside carbon shells
In situ transmission electron microscopy at EMSL was used to study structural changes in the team?s new anode system. Real-time measurements show silicon nanoparticles inside carbon shells before (left) and after (right) lithiation.
Researchers built upon current technology by making a new type of anode that consists of single silicon nanoparticles inside carbon shells, much like yolks inside eggs. In this new design, lithium ions flow from the cathode through the electrolyte, diffuse through the carbon shells, and enter the silicon?which can hold ten times as many lithium ions as carbon alone. By leaving just the right amount of space, the lithiated silicon nanoparticles swell to fill, but not burst, the carbon shell.
The result? A lithium ion battery system that compared to commercial batteries holds seven times more energy and can be discharged and recharged five times as many times before it wears out. Critical to its good performance, the new system forms a stable crust, a solid electrolyte interphase, on the anode that is a consequence of electrolyte decomposition. Moreover, the team?s manufacturing process is affordable, efficient, and can be readily scaled up.

Turkey fortifies Syrian border; bomb hits Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers and other weapons along its border with Syria on Thursday, a military buildup that came as world powers showed new urgency to resolve the crisis before it ignites the region.

A bomb exploded in central Damascus near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people, damaging cars in a parking lot and sending a black cloud rising above the Syrian capital. It was not clear who was behind the bombing.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria since the uprising began in March 2011 has been sanctioned by the government of President Bashar Assad to crush dissent. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed.

But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Turkey, a former ally of Syria, has become one of the strongest critics of the Assad regime, and tensions between the two countries spiked following the downing of a Turkish military plane last week.

A small convoy of Turkish military trucks towing anti-aircraft guns entered a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost, according to TRT television video.

Several anti-aircraft guns also have been deployed elsewhere along the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, the video showed.

Ties between Turkey and Syria have not been this low since the late 1990s, when the neighbors almost went to war. Tensions ran high in the 1980s and 1990s as Turkey developed military ties with Israel and Syria sheltered Turkish Kurd guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Now, Turkey is hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of military defectors who are affiliated with the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane it shot down on June 22 had violated its airspace. Turkey says the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria's airspace and was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots continued in Syrian waters but hopes for their survival are dim, Turkish authorities said. The Turkish military said search teams have found some pieces of the plane as well as equipment belonging to the pilots.

Syria's state-run TV said the bombing occurred at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, a compound that houses several courts. The site is near the capital's famous Hamidiyeh Market, an area crowded with families stocking up on food and other supplies for the weekend, which begins on Friday in Syria.

Witnesses reported hearing one blast, but state-run TV said there were two. The report also said a roadside bomb was found but did not explode.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said some cars were charred and many had windshields blown out.

"I did not see any wounded people, but cars and nearby shops were damaged," said Fawaz Mishhim, who was in a nearby market when he heard the explosion.

The government blamed the attack on terrorists, the term it uses to describe rebels. Syria prevents journalists from working independently, making it difficult to verify accounts from either side in the conflict.

The country has been hit by a wave of explosions in recent months, killing dozens of people. Most targeted government security agencies.

Last month, an explosion targeted a military intelligence compound south of Damascus, killing 55 people. It was Syria's deadliest blast.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned the latest bombing in Syria. She said that "the longer Assad continues on his current course, the longer he perpetrates violence against his own people, he creates the conditions for this kind of loss of control, including in the capital."

Also Thursday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said terrorists assassinated a professor at the Petrochemical Engineering College at al-Baath University in the central province of Homs, along with five of her relatives.

Gunmen broke into her home and shot her, her parents and three nephews, SANA said.

World powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a major breakthrough. Syria has the protection or Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not endorse a call for Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

But U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday it was "very clear" that all the participants at the Geneva meeting ? including Russia ? are on board with a transition plan created by international envoy Kofi Annan.

Clinton told reporters that the invitations to Saturday's meeting in Geneva made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

Lavrov said it was "obvious that a transitional period is needed to overcome the Syrian crisis," but insisted any plans for the future rest on Syria and that the major powers in Geneva must focus on convincing the opposition groups to soften their demands.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia to agree to a plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. Russia is Syria's most important ally, protector and supplier of arms.

There are few options besides keeping up diplomatic pressure, as an international military intervention is all but ruled out in the near future. Few countries are willing to get deeply involved in such an explosive conflict, and Russia and China have pledged to veto any international attempt to intervene.

Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community - Kirby's ...

Kirby 20th Anniversary

Is it just me, or does it seem like every major gaming franchise is having a major anniversary recently? Not that it?s a bad thing, mind you! Kirby joins the list of characters celebrating years of achievement, and his big day celebration package will be an?enticing one for fans of the series. Whether you are a lifelong Kirby fan who has been itching to relive some of Kirby?s most treasured classics, or a recent fan of everyone?s favorite pink puffball (sorry, Jigglypuff)? who is interested in exploring Kirby?s much heralded roots, Kirby?s 20th Anniversary package for the Nintendo Wii should be a welcome addition to the collections of millions of gamers.

Kirby-20th-Anniversary-Box-ArtA preview of what the outside and inside box art will look like for the Japanese version

As of right now, the Kirby 20th Anniversary package has been confirmed for both Japan and North America, with a Japan release date of July 19 and a North American release date TBD. On the cusp of the release of the new Wii U, I can?t imagine that this will get released much later than the Japan date here in the Americas, but who knows what Nintendo will end up doing.

KirbyPlease guys, don?t overshadow my game with the release of the Wii U (;_;)

The package is set to contain 6 Kirby classics: Kirby?s Dream Land (Game Boy), Kirby?s Dream Land 2 (Game Boy), Kirby?s Adventure (NES), Kirby Super Star (SNES), Kirby?s Dream Land 3 (SNES) and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64). All in all, this a pretty fantastic lineup, as it covers a wide, although not complete, range of Kirby?s retro titles.

Many of these can either be downloaded on the 3DS or Wii Shop Channel, but having them all in one package is still an attractive piece for fans, especially for people who want to play the Game Boy versions of Kirby on the TV, which is otherwise impossible without a Super Game Boy for the SNES or Game Boy Player for the Gamecube.

The package also comes with a soundtrack and a timeline of the Kirby series, although details of? exactly what those will contain are still unknown. We will be sure to update you with more information on this delightful pink package as it gets released.

Also, don?t forget to check out our Facebook and Twitter contest, where you can win awesome goodies from us here at RGN as thanks for coming to this new site and helping it blossom.

Kris Humphries Under Oath: Only Friends with Myla Sinanaj!

Kris Humphries was deposed by Kim Kardashian's legal team yesterday, as the divorce case between this former couple hopefully nears an end.

Under oath, the power forward reportedly swore that he never actually dated Myla Sinanaj, a NYC hotel employee who has suddenly become a key player because Kardashian believes Kris' relationship with her shoots down his case of supposed heartbreak.

TMZ insiders say Kris told lawyers that he and Myla were only friends and he never revealed anything specific about Kim to her.

Kris Humphries Photograph

Other sources contradict this claim, however, with one alleging that Humphries opened up to Sinanaj about Kanye West and his suspicions that the rapper was getting it on with Kardashian.

Humphries is basing his case for more money from Kim on the accusation that she defrauded him into marriage and never had any intention of making the union work. But he offered no evidence for this assertion during his deposition, witnesses tell TMZ.

Up next, or in the near future, Sinanaj will answer questions, while Reggie Bush may even be dragged into this ridiculous mess.

ANGE Emile Jacotey music review by tszirmay

4 stars It' s a bloody shame that non-French speakers cannot completely enjoy the work of this legendary French progressive paragon and have no choice but to rely on the music alone (which isn't too shabby!) and on the dramatic inflections of Christian Decamps sensational voice , which i agree may be an acquire taste. I for one consider him a prog vocal phenomenon. His theatrical lung augments in value when one understands the deep poetry involved, a heady mixture of surly, sarcastic, seedy, salty, sweaty , ribald, bawdy and at times, nearly pornographic words that underline the band's profound disdain for brutal politics, hypocritical religion and any other form of organized control. I went to a French (from France) school called College Stanislas (hmmmmmm!) in Montreal where I graduated in philosophy and literature and I can attest without hesitation that Christian's lyrical work is absolutely top-notch and worthy of the highest accolades. In fact, they constitute a separate source of gratification all together. Their 70s output is remarkable and inspired, we all know how fabulous the classic "Au Del? du D?lire" remains today (in my top 5 all-time for some very personal reasons) and this follow-up is no meager slouch or rehashed by-product. The instrumental backbone is cemented by brother Francis' utterly spooky organ, an instrument so exhilaratingly unique and recognizable (only Soft Machine's Mike Ratledge can claim the same fame with his amazing haunting metallic organ). Furthermore, Jean-Michel Br?zovar's sizzling electric and acoustic playing performs judicious leaps and bounds (imagine a harsher-toned Hackett). The rhythm section has a serene sense of "thud", a powerful motor that fuels the fire in Christian's voice.

The tracks are all near classics with inspired performances such as the mesmerizing and atmospheric ballad "Sur La Trace des F?es", easily an Ange high watermark that features a heavenly chorus and the emotionally charged quivering voice of the finest pedigree. There is a definite Genesis circa Trespass feel which is a badge of honor when played this convincingly.

The playfully sarcastic and ultra-theatrical "Le Nain de Stanislas" requires a profound understanding of the dwarf-like lyrics as they blend with the slightly oriental circus style. The spoken part is utterly phenomenal, a technique used brilliantly before on the classic Jacques Brel penned "Ces Gens L?" and later, on the Guet-Apens album's lewd " R?veille- toi". The choir section is equally expressive, like some Truffaut movie soundtrack rendered rock with a Br?zovar axe spurt.

The wispy "Jour Apr?s Jour" is the bucolic side of the band from Alsace, the words fully inspirational, French poetry at its musical finest, indeed closer to "chanson francaise" but so what? That's who they are!

"Ode to Emile" furthers the mood, a sweet ode to the elegance of old age, the return to one's innocence with some superb lyrical turns ("When winter fools autumn", "The bogs of your childhood" "Wipe the firmament's behind " etc? ) and the music slides in nicely along.

The acme is achieved with the masterful "Ego et Deus", a brawny prog hurricane lush with bluster, spite and dripping cynicism as expressed by the 'in your face" vocal , all shoved along by a devilish organ, delirious guitar. This song should have been further developed with a massive instrumental mid-section, but that's just me wishful hoping.

Two softies , first the waltz-like "J'Irai Dormir.." is typical French prog, a melodramatic, over the top screech, with tons of contrast and hue, suddenly blasted into smithereens by a slithering guitar solo. "Aurelia" is another Elka string organ driven ditty that relies on sexual imagery that perhaps seems bland by today's standards but in 1976. It was stretching the liberal French censor's patience, to say the least.

The other classic track is "Les Noces" a nasty, anti-religious rant of impeccable irony, launching assorted tirades against the marriage "ceremony" featuring a clavinet-like ripple that evokes Canterbury and not Strasbourg! A country-style section, pickin' 'gueetars' and all shows a great amount of "culot" (gall or balls if you like), proving that these guys like to have fun and "frankly, ma'am, don't give a damn!".

"Le Marchand des Plan?tes" puts this album to rest on a rather experimental note with strange sounds obscuring the simple melody, scratching guitar and pulsating bass dominate freely, with interesting and original results.

Emile Jacotey won't touch the 3 other classics , adding the stunningly raw "Le Cimetiere des Arlequins" to the other two I mentioned here) but contains some memorable moments on a career that stays vibrant in 2012.

Israel and Russia: Trade and restive Arab world outweigh differences on Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Israel today for a two-day visit that publicly emphasizes the dramatic reconciliation and galloping economic cooperation between Moscow and Jerusalem. In private, it likely featured some harsh words between Mr. Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the Kremlin's political support for Syria and Iran.

Experts say that the geopolitical differences between Russia and Israel are not as deep as many people believe. With the exception of sharp disagreement over what to do about Iran's alleged drive for nuclear weapons, differences are greatly overshadowed by a growing array of commonalities.

Topping that list is a shared sense that Russia and Israel alone fully understand the menace of Islamist extremism. Israel believes it confronts extremism on a daily basis, and Putin sees it as a serious threat to Russia's territorial integrity emanating from the restive northern Caucasus region, whose population is mainly Sunni Muslim. Both feel increasingly isolated in the Middle East, with Egypt's new Muslim Brotherhood president hinting that he might revise his country's treaty with Israel, and Russia facing unprecedented hostility from Turkey and the Arab world over its continued support of Syria's strongman Bashar al-Assad.

QUIZ ? Vladimir Putin 101: How much do you know about Russia's president?

"The worse Russia's relations with the Arab world, the better they will be with Israel," says Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs, a leading Moscow-based foreign policy journal.

"Russia now finds itself at odds with almost all the Arab countries over Syria, and this could be a long-term trend. Syria is the last Russian client state inherited from the Soviet Union, and it's probably not going to last. New rulers will be far more mistrustful of Russia, and if they are Islamists the feelings will be mutual. At least when they're talking about the threat of radical Islam, Putin will feel mentally very close with Netanyahu," he says.

TOURISM, TRADE BOOST RELATIONSHIP

Putin's first stop after arriving in Israel today was the dedication of a monument to Soviet Red Army forces killed in World War II in Netanya. Putin told a crowd of about 600 people that the double-winged white dove erected by Israel "symbolizes the triumph of good and peace. May these values always serve as the basis for friendship between our nations."

Since the collapse of the USSR, the Russian narrative about World War II ? that the Red Army liberated eastern Europe from Naziism ? has been painfully challenged by many former allies whose new version of history sees the arrival of Soviet forces as the beginning of a new occupation.

"Israel is one of the few countries in the world that fully backs the Russian view on World War II, so for Putin the symbolism here is very important," says Dmitry Maryasis, an expert with the Israeli Studies Department of the official Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow. "The role of the Red Army in liberating Europe is not often celebrated these days, so Russians will receive this signal very warmly."

During the cold war, the USSR supported rejectionist Arab states and the Palestinians against Israel, a position that had ideological roots in the competition between Zionism and Communism in 20th century Europe. But the ideological dimension disappeared with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emigration of more than 1 million Russian speakers to Israel in the 1990s, even before Russia's ties with authoritarian Arab states were moderated by improving economic and political ties with Israel and the West.

"Everything has changed since the end of the USSR, and the relationship with Israel is totally transformed," says Yevgeny Satanovsky, president of the independent Institute for Middle Eastern Studies in Moscow. "In Israel, one in seven citizens is Russian-speaking. There are now many prominent Russian-speakers, even at high levels of power, who have feelings of closeness toward Russia. In Moscow, there is no more official anti-Semitism and leaders are pragmatic. In some ways, such as the attitude toward the threat from radical Islamism, we are even closer in our views than Israel is with the US."

Trade has burgeoned; Israeli exports to Russia grew almost fourfold between 2003 and 2008, reaching $3 billion. That may not sound like much, but the areas of economic cooperation under consideration include nanotechnology, energy, and joint military projects, including the production of unmanned drone warplanes. Russia's natural gas monopoly Gazprom is eyeing offshore gas deposits in Israel, while the state-owned Russian Railroads is hoping to participate in a new Tel Aviv-Eilat high speed rail link.

SUPPORTING THE 'DEVIL THEY KNOW'

Putin later met with Netanyahu for a full discussion about Syria and Iran that both leaders characterized as detailed and friendly. Experts say that on Syria, at least, the two sides may not be all that far apart.

"Israel supports the Western position that Assad must go, while Russia has been backing Assad," says Mr. Maryasis. "But they're probably much closer than you would think. Israel is not keen to see a big mess break out on its border with Syria ? along the Golan Heights ? which has been relatively stable for years. Israel might actually prefer the devil it knows, Assad, to what might follow him. There is a very palpable fear in Israel that radical Islamists might follow Assad, and everything will get worse."

Likewise, experts say, Russia's occasional contacts with Islamist groups Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as its efforts to advocate for the Palestinian cause, are no longer viewed in Jerusalem as Soviet-style mischief, but merely the same sort of pragmatism practiced by other powers.

"Russia has always said that its participation is central to any future Middle East settlement, but in reality there's not much Moscow can do," says Georgy Mirsky, an expert at the Institute for World Economy and International relations, Moscow's most important official research center. "At the same time, relations with Israel are moving forward, powered by growing numbers of Russian businessmen and a flow of tourists ? Russia is the second biggest source of tourists to Israel these days ? and much improved dialogue on the official level."

Iran remains the single major sticking point. Experts say that Netanyahu will probably have given Putin an earful on the need for tougher sanctions and perhaps military measures to stop Iran's nuclear program, while Putin will have urged caution.

"Russia is deeply skeptical that military measures against Iran can have any lasting effect, and is very worried that a war could spread into Russia's own northern Caucasus," says Mr. Satanovsky. "Russia worries that it will cause regional disruption, refugee flows, and no one knows what else might come in the wake of an attack on Iran. This is the one big point on which Russia and Israel are doomed to disagree, and go on disagreeing."

Self Improvement | You Don't Need Permission to Do Great Things ...

By Lance Winslow -

?There are simply too many rules, laws, and regulations which prevent small business owners from going to the next step, expanding their business, getting a business loan, or hiring more employees. If we really want to deal with our unemployment situation, increase innovation, and get this economy firing on all cylinders again then we need to be thinking here ? so let?s go ahead and talk about that for a moment if we might.

The other day, someone contacted me at our think tank with a revolutionary business idea ? it was a new invention in the alternative energy sector. Now most of these eco-innovations aren?t really that efficient, and they are merely trying to capitalize on the environmental movement and trend. However this one was quite good, and yet this entrepreneur was so worried about all the licenses, rules, and where to hire a lawyer, accountant, and consultant or business coach to help him through the myriad or maze of prerequisites ? that he was literally afraid to start.

He was looking for someone to give him permission so that he can go out and create this new invention for the marketplace, sell it, and pursue his passion. The reality is you don?t need permission in the United States of America to go out and do great things. Unfortunately, far too many people have their brain stuck in a box, and they have been indoctrinated by authoritarian systems ? and that?s a real problem. Let me put it this way; you don?t need permission to go and do great things in this life, or pursue your happiness.

But, if you still believe you do, then I hereby give you permission to go out and do your life?s work with all the passion and vigor you can muster. What I?m saying is; it?s time to go out and do it, and figure out the rest as you go along. Yes, there will be some rules and regulations and hoops that you must jump through, and you do have to follow the law, but most importantly, you need to act, and get started. If you wait until everything is perfect, and you have all the permission you need, you?ll never do anything in your life.

Now wouldn?t that be a travesty? You know, sometimes you just got a get out there and get it done. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Infrastructure - Venezuela - Future president faces huge infrastructure investment gap

By Jacopo Dettoni?/?Business News Americas

The new president of Venezuela will have to close a US$23bn deficit in infrastructure investments, according to a study published by local construction chamber CVC.

"Neighboring countries such as Colombia, Peru and Chile earmark between 5% and 7% of their GDP for infrastructure projects, far more than Venezuela does," CVC president Gilberto Dao told BNamericas.

Investments in new infrastructure - excluding oil & gas and housing - amounted to 2% of GDP in 2011, according to CVC figures.

Sectors such as transport, health, potable water and sewerage rank at the top of the agenda for investments in infrastructure, Dao said.

Meanwhile, maintenance work totaling 60bn bol?vares (US$13.8bn) needs to be carried out on existing infrastructure, CVC estimates.

"The new government should first develop a solid and continuous maintenance policy for infrastructure," Enzo Betancourt, head of Venezuela's engineers' chamber, told BNamericas.

Venezuela ranked 117th out of 139 countries in the 2011 World Economic Forum (WEF) global ranking for quality of overall infrastructure, worse than any other Latin American country except Paraguay.

The WEF has long highlighted the impact of Venezuela's investment environment on its infrastructure.

"The generally unflattering portrait of Venezuela's investment environment is mirrored by a relatively bad assessment of its infrastructure quality," according to a 2007 WEF report.

The country needs to engage better with private investors, both Dao and Betancourt said.

"We suggest a review of the laws that allow private investors to take part in such investments through public-private partnerships," Dao said. "Funds for new infrastructure projects could also come from the issuance of specific infrastructure bonds."

Venezuela will hold its presidential election on October 7, with incumbent Hugo Ch?vez and opposition leader Henrique Capriles the main contenders.

Farming in a Political way! - Somerset Food and Drink

Last year, I met Max and Maxine Cotton of Six Brothers Organic, at their Verland Green Farm, in Baltonsborough to discuss Turkey Farming and . . .first discussed why Max chose Organic Turkey Farming.

?For political and marketing reasons, I guess? he says. ?I believe strongly in the need for man to work with nature, I feel that commercial factory farmed poultry is badly abused, and we should be trying to work with nature and not against it.?

?We operate in the top 5 per cent of Britain?s turkey market we have the highest welfare standards and that?s what our customers want.?

Though Six Brother?s is a part-time concern Max bristles if you call him a hobby farmer. ?This is a business.?

Max breeds, rears and processes all his turkeys on a 7 acre farm and says he loves being part of Christmas ? a passion shared with his wife Maxine.

Some interesting facts by Max:

?In studies carried out on our own organic farm, commercial male turkeys bred to have a very large amount of breast meat and short legs have a fertility rate of less than 10 per cent ? typically between 5% and 8%. Without artificial insemination modern commercial turkeys like these are incapable of breeding and this is fundamentally immoral and against the most basic principles of livestock husbandry. Our turkeys are a more natural shape, look spectacular on the table and mate naturally with a fertility rate of over 90 per cent?

?Our Turkeys are completely organic and free range and have access to pasture and orchards during daylight hours. Turkeys eat a lot of grass and unlike other poultry they love weeds particularly nettles! We keep a rare breed called the Norfolk Black ? they grow slowly in comparison with commercial strains. It?s a strong hardy bird with an old-fashioned flavour.?

You can?t buy a turkey like this in the supermarket. Supermarket turkeys ? the free range turkeys, even the organic ones, are killed plucked and gutted and packed within a few minutes at enormous processing factories dealing with thousands of birds an hour. They are all bred through artificial insemination indoors.

Six Brothers turkeys are killed and plucked and then hung in cold store for up to two weeks so the flavours can develop and the meat can mature. They are then gutted and dressed.

When he?s not farming turkeys Max works as a political correspondent for the BBC Politics Show. He says his main claim to fame is being hit by Margaret Thatcher with her handbag! He is soon to leave the BBC, and go full-time on his farm, extending it from 350 Turkeys to 1,000 birds. The connection with the BBC doesn?t just end there, as Maxine is Breakfast Producer for BBC 5 Live and has to juggle her work commitments with a very large family and of course the organic turkey farm.

What I found most interesting are the concerns about artificial insemination in turkeys. Only a few thousand are produced the Six Brothers way across the whole country. A few hundred of them are organic.

All of their turkeys are killed by Max. He does have some much-needed help in the busy period running up to Christmas. But farming like this means there is no terrifying last journey on the motorway to an abattoir in a plastic crate. Birds are handled individually, gently, and they are treated with respect and with compassion.

You can buy Six Brothers Organic Turkeys at Brown Cow Organics, Stephen Butchers of Glastonbury, and of course from the farm itself. Please call them first though as the Turkeys are selling fast, and the last day for collection from the farm is on the 23rd December. They do a delivery service, but best to call them first to discuss this.

Max told me that, every January, he with a group of other turkey farmers, get together to unwind after it?s all over and celebrate with what he describes as ?a bit of a session?. It is known as . . .?the Turkey survivors? dinner? . . Sounds good to me!

SanDisk Extreme 3.0 (64GB)

Ranking USB drives is a question of superlatives. Who is largest? Fastest? Cheapest? In a product category with few features to differentiate one model from another, SanDisk has put forward the SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 ($99.99 list), a drive that ticks all the boxes?faster, bigger, cheaper?and does it all with a wicked looking design. That earns it our Editors' Choice for USB flash drives.

Design and Features
The slim black drive features plastic construction, with a matte finish and a glossy finished slider that snaps the USB plug in and out like a stiletto knife. The drive measures 0.54 by 0.8 by 2.75 inches (HWD) and weighs 0.5 ounce, and it's small enough that it won't crowd out neighboring USB ports or weigh down your pocket when attached to a key ring.

The drive boasts a 64GB capacity, which translates to 59.5GB of free space. With FAT32 formatting, the SanDisk Extreme is compatible with both Windows (Windows 7, Vista, and XP) and Mac (OS X 10.5 and up). SanDisk also offers 2GB of free cloud storage through a partner service.

Included on the drive is a copy of SanDisk SecureAccess, a program that offers password protection and a secure partition with 128-bit AES encryption, similar to the software found on the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTravler Locker+ (8GB) ($18 street, 4 stars). The software is Windows only, but Mac users download a Mac-compatible version of the software from SanDisk's website. Also included on the drive is Club SanDisk, which is nothing more than offers for sponsored downloads, like a 60-day trial of McAfee Internet Security, a trial of GoToMyPC, RoboForm Password Manager, and an eBay sidebar tool for Internet Explorer which lets you keep an eye on auctions of interest at all times.

The new 64GB drive sells for $99.99 (list), which comes out to $1.56 per Gigabyte. That puts it in the middle of the pack for high-capacity USB drives?the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro USB Flash Drive (64GB) ($117 street, 4 stars) for example, sells for $1.83 per GB?but on the cheaper end of the USB 3.0 price spectrum. For comparison, the the rugged rubberized Corsair Flash Voyager GT (32GB) ($64.99 direct, 4 stars) for $2.03 per GB; the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB) ($80 street, 4 stars) sells for $2.35 per GB. The only USB 3.0 drive we've reviewed with a lower price per GB is the much smaller 16GB Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 ($1.25 per GB). And did we mention that SanDisk covers the drive with a lifetime warranty?

Performance
SanDisk claims that the Extreme earns its name with blazing USB 3.0 speeds, claiming 170 MBps write speed and 190 MBps read. In timed data transfer tests, the speeds weren't quite as blazing, but still impressive at 110 MBps (write) and 105 MBps (read)?fast enough that we may be bumping up against the limits of our test bed PC. Compare this to other USB 3.0 drives, like the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 (61.8 MBps write, 99.4 MBps read) or the Flash Voyager GT (36.7 MBps write, 95.6 MBps read), and it's easy to see that the SanDisk Extreme wins on speed, hands-down.

Even when using a slower USB 2.0 connection, the SanDisk Extreme zips past competitors with write speeds of 29.5 MBps and read speeds of 31.7 MBps. The closest competitors, the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (9.7 MBps write, 24.0 MBps read) and the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro USB Flash Drive (64GB) ($117 street, 4 stars) (12.2 MBps write and 21.9 MBps read), get left in the dust.

The previous Editors' Choice, the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ is still a smart buy when looking for affordable encryption, but with those same tools available for the SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0, it's hard to ignore the myriad ways that the SanDisk Extreme has put all others on notice. With unbeaten performance, an affordable price, and a snappy design, it's not hard to see why the SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 gets the nod for our new Editors' Choice for flash drives.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the SanDisk Extreme 3.0 (64GB) with several other flash drives side by side.
