Our "Little Ninja" Program will be geared towards the more playful aspects of martial arts. Students will learn how to punch, kick, & block. They will also learn stances and improve coordination. Most importantly they will have lots of fun. Each class will start off with a warm up routine to music and then we will move on to our karate activities. These activities will vary from class to class and include games, relays, obstacle courses, and more! Students will be continually reminded about when and where it is appropriate to use their karate moves. While the classes will be conducted primarily in English there will be a little bit Japanese thrown in which will mostly be numbers and a few names of our basic stances. (My pronunciation is slightly different than the traditional pronunciation in order to remain consistent with my teacher) Each class will end with the students lining up and doing a bow.

This will be an exploratory time for children to interact with their caregivers with the supervision of qualified staff members. Description of classes, expectations, age requirements, and cost:
Each class uses a different project, which involves topics that can easily be related to by children. Examples are animals and cultural objects from various countries.
- Students will perceive an "alphabet" of sorts focused on five basic elements of shape families that combine to form all objects. By learning to view the world through these five elements and how to transcribe the information to paper, everyone, so-called "drawers" and "non-drawers" can learn to become artists in their own right and develop their own unique style of realistic interpretation.
- All drawing mediums provided are safe and non-toxic
- Children will gain confidence in their visual and observation skills, which will enhance their learning in schools and beyond. They will more incline to explore their creative potential and to enjoy the stimulating world of arts.

Post-Katrina Upgrades Protecting New Orleans From Isaac
Hurricane Isaac continues its northwesterly crawl across Louisiana, leaving considerable damage and not a little heartbreak in its wake, particularly in the parishes south of New Orleans.
But it?s no Katrina, and not simply because it?s a less severe storm than its storied predecessor (Isaac is moving through as a Category 1, while Katrina was a Category 3 at landfall). Casualties and property damage have been significantly reduced in the Pelican State in part because Louisiana is better prepared for a hurricane than it was when Katrina made landfall seven years ago.
Some of the most dramatic improvements have been to anti-hurricane infrastructure?new structures in place have thus far stopped Isaac from becoming a repeat scenario. "Prior to Katrina, we had a system in name only. Now we have a true storm damage risk-reduction system," says Rene Poche of the Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. "Back then, a storm used to come to the city in that it was able to flow into these various canals and the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway. What this system has done is taken the fight to the storm. We?ve moved it away from the interior of the city."
The primary infrastructure projects have been the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier, completed last summer, and the Seabrook Floodgate, which was up and running this month.
The Lake Borgne Surge Barrier is a 2-mile wall east of New Orleans stretching from the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway to the Mississippi River?Gulf Outlet Canal, also known as "Mr. Go." Both of those waterways acted as conduits for storm surge during Katrina, allowing water to rush into the city. Constructed with more than 1000 concrete piles driven 100 feet into the earth and reinforced with angled piles driven 200 feet deep, the barrier is designed to prevent storm surge from Lake Borgne and the Gulf of Mexico from flooding New Orleans.

The Seabrook Floodgate keeps the waters of Lake Pontchartrain (to the north of New Orleans) in Lake Pontchartrain during a storm. When Katrina struck, waters from the lake flooded into the Industrial Canal, which flows through the eastern portion of the city as well as by the western edge of the Katrina-devastated Lower Ninth Ward, on its way to the Mississippi River. The collapse of the Industrial Canal?s floodwalls during Katrina caused the catastrophic flooding to the area.
Secondary improvements by the Corps include enhanced pumping stations as well as repaired and reinforced floodwalls throughout the city. As of Wednesday, the system has worked as planned. Some of the temporary drainage pumps at the 17th Street Canal went on the fritz Wednesday morning, but they were quickly repaired.
The storm hasn?t finished with the Big Easy, but the worst appears to be over. So far, the waters have been held back.

Comics writer Karl Kesel and his wife recently adopted a baby whose parents were addicted to heroin. This is the sort of backstory that would normally land a kid in the foster-care system, which does not, statistically speaking, offer much hope at a full and happy life. The Kesels have seriously done some good here, but it's cost them. Their son Isaac racked up $67,000 in medical bills during his first few months of life (it's not clear yet how much of that will be covered by Myrna Kesel's insurance), and it cost another $25,000 to adopt him. Karl Kesel is selling off his collection of comic books to pay the bills, but some Redditors have set up a crowd-funding campaign to help out. You can donate for the next two days.

LiftPort, a group that already holds the record for tallest elevator, is taking a second stab at the technology after going into "hibernation" in 2007. Founder Michael Laine has resurrected the company and taken to Kickstarter to drum up interest (as well as a little cash) in his latest project -- a lunar elevator. As Laine explains in the video, an elevator from the surface of the Moon to a rendezvous point between the Earth and its satellite is actually possible using current technology. And, thanks to its low gravity and lack of atmosphere, a much simpler construction site. The first step is a $1 million feasibility study that will involve a two kilometer tall elevator here on Earth. LiftPort has already far exceeded its Kickstarter goal of $8,000, but the point was never to fund the entire project. The hope was to garner some media attention and get people involved and invested (both financially and emotionally) by offering rewards. You could even pledge enough money to base jump from the top of the tethered research tower, which will be held aloft by helium balloons. A car carrying the Japanese ambassador to China was targeted in Beijing on Monday by a man who ripped off the vehicle's Japanese flag, a foreign ministry official said.
The ambassador, Uichiro Niwa, was not hurt in the attack, the official said.
His car was forced to stop by two vehicles. A man stepped out of one and ripped off the Japanese flag, the official said.
The Japanese embassy filed a protest with the Chinese foreign ministry and demanded such an incident is never repeated, the official said.

Democrats that same year held their party confab in Boston, Massachusetts, which also took on the aura of a garrison town complete with razor-wire fencing to keep protesters away from the main action.
Protesters in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, host of the 2008 Republican convention, faced off against baton-wielding police in full riot gear, with hundreds of people eventually placed under arrest.

Drone attacks kill 16 in Pakistan: officials
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - Missile-firing U.S. drone aircraft killed at least 16 people on Friday in an attack in northwest Pakistan, two Pakistani intelligence officials.
The attacks targeted three walled compounds in the Shawal Valley, which is in the South Waziristan region on the border with Afghanistan, the officials said. The area has long been known as a sanctuary for militants.
The drone attacks are highly controversial in Pakistan, where there is anger over civilian casualties and what is perceived as a violation of Pakistani sovereignty.
But U.S. officials say that Pakistan does not control the militant-held territory where the drones strike. The United States considers drones a key weapon in the war against al Qaida and Taliban insurgents. (Reporting by Saud Mehsud; Writing by Katharine Houreld; Editing by Robert Birsel)
