A lvarez High has its first Central Coast Section team title.
The Eagles girls wrestling team won the CCS team title with seven girls, five of whom qualified for the state championships Feb. 24-25 in Lemoore.
Headed to the state finals for Alvarez are Alejandra Franco (98 pounds); Araceli Hernandez (122); Aviery Ramirez (132); Deneb Canedo (154) and Ivanna Torres (189). Bryanna Curiel and MariCar Adolfo placed in CCS.
Honor for Edwards
Pitcher Daniel Edwards was named to the Louisville Slugger pre-season high school All-American baseball team, announced by baseballnews.com.
Last year Edwards posted a 12-1 record in pitching Monterey High to a Monterey Bay League title and Central Coast Section Division II championship, hurling a three-hitter in the CCS title game.
Edwards, who also catches, finished with 53 strikeouts in 75 innings, completing five games for Monterey. He also hit cleanup for the Toreadores.
Cunningham debuts
Returning to the site where he was the brakeman for the United States Olympic bobsled four-man and two-man teams, Nick Cunningham piloted the two-man bobsled team at the World Cup in Whistler, Canada.
Cunningham, a former sprinter at Boise State, teamed with Dallas Robinson to finish ninth overall, the top United States finisher.
"We wanted to make a statement to the world that we are here to compete and that there's depth in the United States program,'' Cunningham
said. "Coming back here and getting a top 10 finish as a driver feels amazing.''Competing against experienced Olympic and World Championship medalists, Cunningham and Robinson were in the mix, blistering the start with identical 4.81 times in their two races.
As a senior at Monterey High, Cunningham won Monterey Bay League track titles in the 100, 200 and 400 meter sprints, reaching the state meet in the 100.
Judo dominance
Anthony Medina and Monstserrat Valenzuela were champions at the San Jose Judo Invitational.
Members of the Bojuka Ryu Judo club, the pair were joined by silver medal winning teammates Kai Yasuda, Malcolm Medina, Eroz Valenzuela and Tommy Carroll.
Placing third among the 700 competitors included Corey Fontana, Dominic Petersen, Abby Shioya, Dante Duffell, Ashton Creveling and Konan Van Lear.
Short sprint
Former Mission Trail Athletic League sprint champion Drake Wilson ran a 7.39 second 60-meter dash at an indoor meet in Ithaca, N.Y. for Rochester Institute of Technology.
Wilson, who prepped at York, also anchored the winning 800 meter relay team with a 22.96 split.
Pair win judo title
Michael Kim and David Cota of the Salinas Judo Club won gold medals at the 64th San Jose Buddhist Judo Invitational.
Placing second was Richard Levin while Joshua Flores finished third. Earlier this year, Leonid Levin was promoted to shodan (first degree black belt).
Wrestling camp
An eight-week wrestling camp for grades 1-8 will be held Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., beginning March 8 at the Monterey Sports Center. The camp is conducted by Roberto Dixon. Fee is $53. Call 646-3439.
Basketball clinic
The Monterey Bay Hoopsters will host a girls fundamental basketball clinic for ages 12-18, Feb. 25-26 from 9 a.m. to noon at Monterey Peninsula College. Fee is $40. Discount rates available for multiple family participants. Call 277-1173.
PONY signups
The Salinas Valley PONY Baseball/Softball League is having signups for all levels every Saturday in February from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at El Dorado Park. A Run, Shoot, Kick and Throw Sports Camp for ages 7-13 will be held March 26-30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ferrante Ball Field. A junior track program for ages 4-14 will be on Tuesday and Thursday starting March 27 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at MPC. Pee Wee baseball for ages 4-6 starts April 14 at Larking Park. A spring co-ed slowpitch softball league starts March 4. Applications can be picked up at the city of Monterey Recreation and Community Services Department.
