Way too much for a Wednesday: art, theater, books and music picks ...

The National World War II Museum hosts White Glove Wednesdays today (Oct. 24) at 9 a.m. Curator Eric Rivet leads a program on the uniforms and equipment used by American and German soldiers, and visitors will be invited to try on original and reproduction helmets, boots, packs and other equipment. Beginning at noon, the Victory Belles will sing "A Salute to Our Heroes" at the Stage Door Canteen.

The New Orleans Jazz Institute Master Series continues this afternoon with a free concert at 2 p.m. at the Old U.S. Mint. Saxophonist Ed Peterson will play a jazz tribute to Stevie Wonder.


Harvest the Music continues its free outdoor concert series this week in Lafayette Square. The Mississippi Rail Company plays beginning at 5 p.m., followed by Rebirth Brass Band. Proceeds benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana.

UNO music professors perform Jazz at the Sandbar tonight at 7. Pianist Victor Atkins, saxophonist Ed Petersen and guitarist Steve Masakowski will perform original music based on renowned authors William Faulkner, Dr. Seuss and John Kennedy Toole.

Satirical metal shock rockers GWAR will perform tonight at the House of Blues in their trademark horror-inspired costumes. Cannibus Corpse guitarist Brent Purgason has joined the band as "Pustulus Maximus," filling the role left by late guitarist Cory Smoot ("Flattus Maximus"). Smoot died suddenly last November.

Tonight's theater offerings include 6x6, a showcase of six 10-minute plays by six local playwrights and Verbatim Verboten, a cabaret of word-for-word readings of eavesdropped conversations. The Goodnight Show, a Johnny Carson-style talk show, will feature music by John Boutte and appearances by Drew Ramsey, third-generation owner of Hubig's Pies; Kristen Evans, founder of New Orleans Fringe; and performances by Will Bowling and Chris Kaminstein.

Literary superstar David Sedaris will read and sign books at Tulane's McAlister Auditorium.

RAW: New Orleans presents Provocations at the Howlin' Wolf. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes to this showcase featuring visual art, film, fashion, music, hair and makeup, photography and performing art.

The Wildlife Reserve and Parish Chic host a happy hour at Snug Harbor at 6 p.m. with a silent auction and a "Best in Pink" style contest.?Ninety percent of auction proceeds will benefit Poems and Pink Ribbons, a local creative writing workshop for breast cancer survivors and those living with breast cancer, founded by local poet and activist Kelly Harris-DeBerry.
