LEPS or Longitudinal Elderly Person Shadowing

Longitudinal Elderly Person Shadowing (LEPS) is a remarkable educational experience at the University of Saskatchewan that combines senior citizens? mentorship with interprofessional?learning, and is designed?to foster positive attitudes in students toward older adults and other health care professionals.? Since 2008, 204 students from Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Social Work have partnered with 73 seniors. Community-dwelling older adults are recruited?from a local seniors housing complex, LutherCare?Communities, situated close to the U of S campus. Interprofessional?groups of 3-4 students meet with their assigned senior partner four different times over a three-month?period. Students learn about the life history and current life situation / lifestyle of their assigned senior partner; complete assignments; keep a reflective journal; and participate in facilitated de-briefing sessions. Ongoing evaluation of LEPS?has demonstrated high levels of student satisfaction and significant improvements in student perceptions of older men and women.? Students also report they have increased knowledge of interprofessional?teamwork, including the roles and responsibilities of other health care professionals. The partnership with LutherCare?Communities has been very beneficial, with participating senior citizens expressing high levels satisfaction with the program. Being involved with LEPS provides seniors with opportunities to engage and connect with young people, reflect on their life experiences, gain a deeper understanding of their own lifestyle and health, and reduce students? stereotypes about elderly people in general.
