Who exactly wants me to go to Africa to help them plant palm oil?

August 19, 2012

A few months ago I was approached by a Qatari based firm that wanted me to look into supplying the tiny rich gulf state iceberg lettuce. So naturally, I considered the offer seriously. The terms after all were better than I ever?expected.

Recently, a series of convoluted events has led me to the conclusion this firm may not even be interested in iceberg lettuce any longer. Not even sure if they are even based in Qatar. As now all communications is to be routed through Singapore.

Now it seems, they want me to open up vast tracts of land in Angola and Cameroon.

The reason why I mentioned it?s ?convoluted,? is because this sudden and unexpected change of events came to me via a series of turns and slaloms ? a sealed manila envelope was handed to me in a lawyer?s office. The contents contained maps and a detailed report on the location along with a business proposal. If I wanted more information I have to log into a virtual repository. They have assigned me a case manager to deal with any of my queries.

The brief is simple enough. Assemble a team, clear land and grow palm oil. Money is no object. As for materiale ? everything that is needed is already there in crates in a warehouse in Liberia.

But something is very wrong with this deal. Maybe it?s just a gut instinct. Maybe it?s the idea that the business plan is simply too slick. As it contained satellite imagery that I?ve never ever come across before ? there were some notations in those images, AR-6. Did some checking and found out it?s a military class satellite. Not exactly, your run of the mill farmer?s weather almanac. That with also the realization that this firm doesn?t even have the slightest problems with buying a brand new Augusta chopper to see the project to its logical end.

You see I didn?t really?need that unnecessary piece of hardware. I just thought, I?ll?throw?it into my need list in the way a man drops a stone into a dark well. And now that I know there is no bottom. There is really only one thing to do.

Between me and you. I know that the food crunch is serious. But even I didn?t expect it to be deadly serious. We live in interesting times it seems.

Darkness 2012??

??????????????????????????????????????

?The word Farmer in the countryside?is a power word like hallejuyah or Om -?as the farmer?has always been the?aqua vitae,?the life blood of?the community. Take the word farmer and put it in a lonely man in a room all by himself and it really doesnt make sense at all. It doesnt matter how intelligent or capable that man is ? the word farmer has no agency under those sort of terms.

But put the same word, Farmer in a community and you will begin to see the whole idea of how goodness can be nourished and tended?with love to produce sweet and succulent?fruit. And when the community is well nourished and strong, it can only be confident and assured of its future.

This is why I pity Mini Lee. As it can?t be much fun to be a leader in a country where,?when he says no one will be left behind.?No thinking man believes him. He has no one to blame but himself. Maybe?he should go and set up another committee to connect the dots there.?As?what do you really expect when?the middle class?is systematically?obliterated in Singapore. They can?t even afford to own a car these days. Now he wants a dialogue. I will be frank with you. I don?t have time for him and his sort. No time. Please don?t call me malicious, bigotted?or out to cause mayhem. I am just voicing out my honest unplugged?opinion. I am just?calling a spade a spade.?As that?is how I really?see it. If you want reasons, I can even supply it. But let us leave that as it may. As I didn?t come all the way?down?here to spew vitroil. I want to speak about something much more important and that is the idea of community.

So now I hope?you all?see the wisdom:?why IF?the farmer only serves the goals of the rich and privileged blindly without ever asking, ?how can my community derive benefit from all this?? Then all he really?is a servant to money. And can anyone tell me what then?happens to the idea of?community? You see, how life suddenly ceases to have meaning without the word community.?
